Setelah sekian lama diperbincangkan, akhirnya Mozilla meluncurkan Firefox OS, sistem operasi Firefox untuk perangkat mobile. Peluncuran sistem operasi mobile anyar ini dilakukan di hadapan ratusan wartawan dari seluruh dunia di Barcelona, Spanyol, Minggu (24/2/2013) petang, sehari sebelum pembukaan World Mobile Congress di kota itu.
"Firefox OS membawa kebebasan dan inovasi yang tak terbatas sebagai sistem terbuka bagi pengguna telepon seluler di seluruh dunia," ujar CEO Mozilla Gary Kovacs di Barcelona, Minggu.
Firefox OS berbasis HTML 5 dan merupakan sistem operasi yang sepenuhnya terbuka. Setiap fitur dalam Firefox OS dapat dikembangkan oleh para pengembang aplikasi. Kovacs menerangkan, Firefox OS didesain sebagai sistem operasi yang indah, clean, intuitif, personal, dan mudah digunakan.
“Firefox OS memiliki semua yang dibutuhkan pengguna telepon pintar seperti panggilan telepon, pesan singkat, e-mail, kamera, fitur-fitur media sosial, dan tentu saja perambah Firefox. Anda akan menemukan pengalaman berbeda dengan sistem operasi baru ini,” paparnya.
Untuk memperkaya konten aplikasi, terang Kovacs, Mozilla telah menandatangani kerjasama strategis dengan sejumlah pengembang.
"Dengan demikian konsumen akan mendapatkan pengalaman telepon pintar yang dinamis dan kaya. Kami menjanjikan sebuah sistem operasi yang memudahkan pengguna untuk mendapatkan apa saja yang mereka sukai di internet, termasuk integrasi Facebook dan Twitter," kata Kovacs.
Ada tiga perusahaan yang telah memproduksi perangkat mobile berbasis sistem baru ini yaitu Alcatel, LG, dan ZTE. Tahun ini, kata Kovacs, Huawei akan menyusul memproduksi telepon seluler berbasis Firefox OS. Semua perangkat mobile itu menggunakan prosesor Snapdragon dan Qualcomm.
Bagi Anda yang tak sabar untuk mengetahui seperti apa sistem operasi baru ini, bersabarlah. Sebab, telepon selular Firefox OS baru akan tersedia di Brazil, Colombia, Hungaria, Mexico, Montenegro, Polandia, Serbia, Spanyol, dan Venezuela.
